A core problem of depression is ruminating thoughts, where one becomes caught up in distressing or pessimistic thinking, which then leads to emotional distress. Mindfulness meditation strengthens the capacity to detach from distracting thoughts. Hence, a regular mindfulness practice can help a person let go of negative thoughts before they become overwhelming.
